Heavy equipment defeats ordinary labelling for predictable reasons. A printed film on a generator housing meets heat, oil and a monthly solvent wipe, and the code becomes unreadable long before the machine reaches mid-life. The tag has not failed as a product; it was specified for the wrong environment.

This page covers what we recommend for plant, vehicles, utilities infrastructure and any equipment exposed to weather. In almost every case the answer is engraved anodized aluminium, mechanically fixed, with codes sized generously enough to tolerate wear.

What actually destroys identification

Direct sun and ultraviolet exposure

Anodizing protects the surface and engraving carries the data below it, so a plate on a rooftop chiller or solar array stays readable long after a printed label has faded to grey.

Heat, vibration and rotating plant

Compressors, pumps and generators cycle between hot and cold and shake continuously. Mechanically fixed metal plates ignore both, which is why we recommend rivets or screws over adhesive on this class of equipment.

Solvents, oils and washdown routines

Workshop and food-grade cleaning strips printed faces quickly. Engraved data cannot be dissolved, so identification survives the cleaning schedule rather than dictating it.

Abrasion and physical knocks

Trolleys, hoses and hands catch tag edges first. Recessed placement and a rigid substrate keep plates attached where a flexible film would lift within months.

How we build an industrial tag

We start from the mounting surface. Flat, clean metal accepts a plate directly; castings, curved pipework and painted frames often need a bracket or a repositioned fixing point so the plate sits flush and does not catch.

Character and code sizing comes next. Industrial plates are deliberately larger than office labels because staff read them at a distance, sometimes through a guard and rarely in good light. A matt finish prevents glare from strong overhead lighting or midday sun.

Finally, fixing method. Adhesive backing is fine on static, sheltered equipment. Anything that vibrates, heats up or is washed down gets rivets or screws, which is a small addition to cost and the single biggest factor in whether a tag is still there in five years.
